Launching an e-commerce store requires more than a product page and payment gateway. Terms of service for e-commerce should cover order acceptance and cancellation rights, pricing error policies, shipping risk of loss, intellectual property for product images and descriptions, user-generated content like reviews, and dispute resolution procedures. For international sellers, include governing law clauses and clarify which consumer protection standards apply to cross-border purchases.

Return and refund policies are not just customer service documents — they carry legal weight. The EU grants consumers a 14-day withdrawal right for most online purchases with limited exceptions. Multiple U.S. states require conspicuous refund policy disclosure before purchase. Your policy should be linked from product pages, the cart, and checkout to ensure it meets conspicuous display requirements.

Beyond core legal pages, e-commerce businesses must address tax collection obligations including sales tax nexus in the U.S. and VAT registration thresholds in the EU, accessibility compliance under ADA and EAA standards, PCI DSS requirements for handling payment card data, and age verification for restricted products like alcohol or supplements.
